In addition to being one of the friendliest small towns in Colorado, Salida offers a variety of amazing outdoor recreational opportunities to suit just about everyone’s interest. Within Chaffee county you will find a dozen “fourteeners” or mountains that rise above 14,000 feet, and also several “thirteeners” that are just as majestic. The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area features some of the best whitewater rafting and kayaking in the country. One of the world’s top rated mountain bike rides, the Monarch Crest Trail is located just a few minutes from town and riders can get there by bike shuttle. There are zip line tours, river rafting trips, snowmobile tours, mountain bike shuttles, ATV tours, Jeep rentals, a distillery, a couple of great wineries, breweries, not to mention lots of great restaurants and bars to unwind in after an active day. Visitors can enjoy a wide variety of entertainment in Salida, including wonderful farmer’s markets, concerts and live music, arts and crafts festivals, performing arts, bicycle races, the famous Fibark Whitewater Festival and much, much more. For those looking for uncrowded outdoor recreation, Salida and Chaffee county boasts literally hundreds of miles of trails, including some of the finest singletrack bike and hiking paths in the world. Fishermen will find some of the world’s best trout fishing in the Gold Medal Trout Waters of the Arkansas River. Just minutes away from downtown Salida, skiers will find the Monarch Ski Area to be among the best, all-natural skiing and snowboarding slopes in the country. With more than 350 inches of snow each year it is a powder filled wonderland waiting to be explored! After an adventure filled day you might want to consider a dip in one of the area’s relaxing hot springs. Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort is located just a few minutes north of Salida in Nathrop, Cottonwood Hot Springs are located just northwest of Buena Vista and Joyful Journey Hot Springs are located just down US-285 in Moffat.
